31 Jan 2011
The 2010-2011 Mid South Coast Zone Championships, hosted by the Kiama Centre, were held on the 29th and 30th of January 2011.
The Championships were originally scheduled for the 11th and 12th of December 2010 but had to be postponed due to the waterlogged condition of the track at the Kiama Leisure Centre Playing Fields. More than 40mm of rain fell in less than four hours in Kiama on the Thursday afternoon. As a consequence sections of the track and field areas were covered with pools of water and Kiama Council closed all grounds mid afternoon.
The Zone Championships were then rescheduled to the weekend of the 29th and 30th January 2011. Unfortunately the Kiama Leisure Centre Playing Fields were not available on this weekend due to a previous booking by the South Coast Cricket Association. An attempt to move this cricket match was unsuccessful due to the lack of a suitable alternate venue.
As a consequence the rescheduled Zone Championships were moved to Shoalhaven High School, Park Road, Nowra. The Mid South Coast Zone would like to publicly thank the Shoalhaven Centre for their generous offer of assistance and an alternate venue for the Zone Championships. In a further show of generosity Shoalhaven also agreed to let the Kiama Centre run the Canteen and BBQ for the weekend.
Conditions on Saturday were excellent with cloud cover and moderate temperatures. However Sunday produced a real scorcher that tested athletes, officials and parents alike. The venue at Shoalhaven is outstanding and the track was in fantastic condition.
It was pleasing to see several new Officials presented with their C Grade accreditation during the opening ceremony. Greg Waters (Albion Park) Starter, Kathryn Atkins (Shoalhaven) Long/Triple Jump and Shot Put, Ron Cox (Shoalhaven) Discus and Shot Put, Jacqueline Peace (Shoalhaven) Discus and Shot Put and Howard Vandervord (St Georges Basin) Starter. Congratulations to you all.
Almost three hundred and fifty (350) athletes competed at the Championships. Shoalhaven won the March Past for the first time and the strong Albion Park Centre took out the "Dean Blair Trophy" for an unprecedented fourth successive year.
Sincere thanks go to all the Officials, Centre Committee members, Computer Operators and parents who assisted at the Carnival.
