Zone Championships

12 Dec 2011

The 2011-2012 Mid South Coast Zone Championships were hosted by the Lake Illawarra Centre at Myimbarr Community Park on the 10th and 11th of December 2011.

The situation looked quite grim on the Thursday prior to the Championships when Shellharbour City Council closed all grounds including Myimbarr Community Park.  At one stage it appeared that the Mid South Coast Zone Championships would be postponed for the second consecutive year.  Fortunately the weather improved dramatically on Friday and the carnival was able to proceed as scheduled.  Overall the weather was quite kind to us.  Saturday was cool but sunny in patches.  Sunday started in bright sunshine but soon became overcast with the threat of a significant storm moving in from the South West mid-morning.  Fortunately the storm skirted around us and vented its fury further North in Wollongong.  We did however experience a little rain after the completion of the hurdles events.

Approximately three hundred (300) athletes competed at the Championships.  This was a disappointing ten (10) per cent decrease on the previous season.  It was hoped that number would be higher due to the Region 5 Championships being held in Kiama this season.  Unfortunately this was not the case.  Wet weather has hampered many Centres this season and this may have played a significant part in the lack of nominations from some Centres.

For the second consecutive year Shoalhaven won the March Past.

Once again sincere thanks go to all the Officials, Centre Committee members, Computer Operators and parents who assisted at the Carnival. Everybody did a magnificent job.

Congratulations to the Albion Park Centre who took out the “Dean Blair Trophy” for an unbelievable fifth successive year.
